October 13, 2023
On October 18, 2023, the Avalon Minor Hockey Association (“AMHA”) will hold a membership meeting to address “AMHA-Caps Boundary Agreement Issues & AMHA Financial Strategy”. The meeting notice outlines two ways forward, (1) to replace the existing school-based boundary system in favor of a residential address-based system, or (2) AMHA should fold into SJMHA or complete some other form of a merger with SJMHA.
On October 12, 2023 the SJMHA Board of Directors met and discussed the boundary agreement in place that shares the City’s children between associations based on schools. While the Board is not in favour of Option 1, replacing the existing school-based boundary system in favor of a residential address-based system it is very interested in working with AMHA to explore ways to best achieve Option 2.
It is the position of the SJMHA Board of Directors that the proposal by AMHA to move to a residence-based boundary provides no substantive benefit to the youth of the City, especially so for the members of SJMHA as it would effectively weaken SJMHA to provide a small increase in the AMHA player population. The Board is interested in working with AMHA to explore ways to provide the youth of the City of St. John’s with the best possible hockey program at the least cost to families, whether that be a single minor hockey association, or two affiliated minor hockey associations working together to deliver superior programming.
Today the Board has written AMHA advising them of our position.
If any member of SJMHA has any concerns with, or would like to express their support for the Board’s position, please reach out to any member of the Board of Directors, or speak to Jodi in the office.
