Matthew Churchill Awards:

Matthew Churchill was a U18 house league player with St. John’s Minor Hockey Association, who was tragically killed in 2005 by a hit-run-driver in Portugal Cove.

Matthew had a deep love for hockey - not so much for winning games, but for the fun and friendship it brought. He enjoyed spending every weekend at the rink with his dad and his friends, and was very much a regular fixture at Twin Rinks on the weekends.

Matthew had a gift of lifting spirits and making people smile through his generosity and kindness, and it is these traits that inspired SJMHA to honour Matthew’s memory by presenting an award to one member of each U18 team who display traits similar to Matthew’s…..friendly, polite, encouraging, happy, gentlemanly, a deep love and appreciation for the sport of hockey and a positive impact on others both on and off the ice.

Jeffrey Payne Award:

Jeffrey Payne was a U18 player with St. John’s Minor Hockey who passed away suddenly on March 4th, 2012.

To honour his memory, every year SJMHA awards one U18 player who exhibits dedication, determination, team loyalty, and hard work for each and every game with the Jeffrey Payne Award.
